Business Auto Coverage is required for any business where either owners or employees of the company use either company vehicles or their own personal vehicle in the course of business. It is very important that you have coverage for yourself and any employees that drive to job sites, deliveries or outside sales.
Many companies that you might contract work from require that you maintain a policy with a specific limit of liability. Some even require they be listed as an Additional Insured on the policy.
Business Auto generally has liability limts which are CSL or Combined Single Limit. Personal Auto policies often have split limits like 100/300/100. This would mean that the limit of liability per person in an at-fault accident would be $100,000 for bodily injury, $300,000 per accident and $100,000 in Property Damage. CSL combines all of these coverages in to one maximum amount. Common limit brackets on this coverage would be $500,000, $750,000, $1,000,000 or $2,000,000. Generally if you need to go over $2,000,000 in coverage we would issue a personal umbrella policy.
Business Auto coverage does not replace your CGL or Commercial General Liability policy. In many cases you will need both. Sometimes a non-owned or hired auto endorsement could be added to the CGL policy to allow you to be covered when you borrow, rent or lease a vehicle. Business Auto is needed when you need a broader coverage for vehicles that business owners would personally own or vehicles which are owned by the company itself.
